More than half (52 per cent) of US consumers say they would be interested in the rumored seven-inch iPad Mini, priced between USD249 and USD 300. PriceGrabber polled 2,603 online shoppers about their interest in the device, during the week between April 23 and 30. Of those polled, only 22 per cent currently own tablets. Among owners, versions of the iPad are most popular, owned by 68 per cent of survey respondents. Just 10 per cent own Amazon’s Kindle Fire. Late Apple CEO Steve Jobs notoriously dubbed smaller, seven-inch tablet computers sized between iPads and smartphones, as tweeners.

It seems that the majority of interest in the iPad Mini is for its cheaper price point. It was the main reason expressed by 64 per cent of respondents. About 54 per cent are interested in the smaller, more portable size ; 24 per cent think the iPad Mini would make a great gift; 20 per cent say they would use the tablet for work; and 20 per cent say they would purchase the iPad Mini out of their love for the Apple brand. The features prioritized by potential buyers were low price (84 per cent), 3G connectivity (65 per cent), reduced size (60 per cent), thin body (60 per cent), retina display (43 per cent), Siri (37 per cent), design (31 per cent) and an iOS 6 launch (30 per cent).

Smartphones are the hottest gadgets in the world. But who is the biggest smartphone maker? We do not really know. Samsung, Apple’s chief competitor, gives only vague indications of how many it makes, which means industry watchers come up with widely diverging estimates. Apple Inc reports its iPhone sales down to the thousands. In the January to March period, it shipped 35.064 million. South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co may have sold 32 million, 37.5 million or 44.5 million, depending which analyst you believe. The company itself refuses to say. What is at stake are bragging rights. More accurate sales figures from Samsung would also be useful to competitors and partners like wireless carriers and retailers. When it reported first-quarter results Friday morning, Samsung said only that overall phone shipments were down more than 10 per cent from the fourth quarter, and that smartphone sales were about the same percentage of the company’s overall sales as they have been before. The problem is that Samsung has not reported any hard sales figures in a long time. Analysts and reporters have not been able to get Samsung to clarify the issue.

Wayne Lam, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, likens the process of estimating Samsung sales to “using compasses instead of GPS.” His estimate for first-quarter smartphone sales is 32 million, which would put Samsung behind Apple. IDC Corp, a research firm that tracks phone sales, postponed the release of its quarterly phone sales ranking. It was originally scheduled for just after Samsung’s report, but analyst Ramon Llamas said “additional insight” was needed. Analysts agree that in terms of overall phone sales, Samsung outdid long-time number one Nokia Corp in the first quarter. Taiwan-based smartphone maker HTC Corp also recently stopped reporting how many phones it makes, possibly because its sales are in decline.

Apple has just announced the release of new ipad model which will cost $500 for 16 GB Wi-Fi versions just like its predecessor but the 16 GB Wi-Fi Apple ipad 2 will drop to $400 from its previous price of $500. So, it’s a good deal but what can you expect from additional $100 investment for new ipad? Without any further delays I want to compare specification and features of ipad 2 with new ipad 3. We will also compare this with its rivals like Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 costing $500 for 16 GB version and Amazon’s Kindle fire which costs $200 for 8 GB version.

DISPLAY: Display resolution of ipad 2 is 1024 x 768 but apple has gone a bit further in ipad 3 and increased the screen resolution to 2048 x 1536. This increase in resolution results in what is famously known as retina display. If you don’t know what retina display is then here is a simple explanation. In retina display individual pixels will be indistinguishable to human eye for a certain distance and in case of ipad 3 this distance is 15 inches. Talking about Samsung Galaxy tab, its resolution is 1280 x 800 which not as good as new ipad 3 is but it’s far better than any other tablet available in the market. Similarly, Kindle Fire is not that far behind with a resolution of 1024 x 600 which definitely results is a very good display for small screen size.

PROCESSOR: Apple is using duel-core Apple A5X with quad-core graphics to power the demand of such high resolution display without negatively affecting the battery life. This processor is better than that of ipad 2 and will provide excellent visual for apps and games. Kindle Fire and Galaxy Tab both have duel-core processor as well.

CAMERA: Camera might be the biggest difference in new ipad 3. New ipad offers 5 megapixel camera compared to dismal 0.7 megapixel camera on ipad 2. Talking about other tablets, Galaxy tab has a three megapixel camera and Kindle Fire has no camera at all.

DIMENSION AND WEIGHT: Weight of Wi-Fi version of new ipad is 1.44 pounds (ipad 2 was 1.33 pounds). The weight of ipad 3 with added high speed 4G capability is 1.46 pounds. Kindle fire is at 1.33 pounds and Galaxy tab weigh about 1.30 pounds. Both ipad 2 and new ipad 3 has 9.7 inches display whereas Samsung Galaxy Tab is 10.1 inches and kindle fire has a display of 7 inches. The thickness of ipad 3, galaxy tab and kindle fire are 0.37(ipad 2 was 0.34), 0.30 and 0.5 inches respectively.

FINAL THOUGHTS: New ipad is just $100 more than the previous version of ipad. So, if you are a guy who wants to stay head of the curve in technology, go for new ipad 3 with crystal clear retina display and much better graphics capabilities. And for those in a tight budget, $200 kindle fire will just do the trick for you and is a great viable option.

Nokia is clearly struggling with the market and in a bid to gain its market share, Nokia is planning to manufacture cheaper windows smartphones. Nokia is aiming to make a phone that operators could give away for free to customers. CEO of Nokia Stephen Elop spoke at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that the new phones is a low price phone costing around 190 euro smartphone that runs on Windows mobile phone OS.

“With great products for customers, I think the rest will fall into place” Elop said. In most of the countries cellphone carriers subsidies the sales of smartphone to customers who are will to sign a contract. The low price of the phone means that the customers might get their phone for free with a contract and the load on the pocket will be low.

Nokia was once a dominant force on the cellphone market but has been loosing its ground in recent years. At the time cellphones running Google Android and iPhones are enjoying the increasing popularity. The Finnish giant Nokia is desperately trying for a comeback with smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows software in what Elop has called as the war of the ecosystems.

Nokia began to ship its first Windows based smartphone from October. Nokia is planning to gradually replace its sweetheart but old Symbian software in its smartphones with the new Windows Operating System.

Nokia became the worlds top cellphone maker in 1998 and reached a good 40 per cent market share in 2008 but the company has gradually lost its holding on the market and fell to below 30 per cent last year. This decline in market share lead to massive job cuts and nearly 10,000 layoffs was announced last year. Nokia has decided to stop assembling cellphones in Europe and shift its production base to Asia in order to gain a competitive edge in smartphone war.

5) www.jumblo.com : It also allows free SMS and calls. Limited SMS available here.

6) www.voipbuster.com : A year ago this website provided unlimited no of sms to any number and they were delivered instantly. The software is available but the no of SMS need to be tested.

7) http://www.stha.co.cc is another free text SMS sending site. It allows SMS of 140 characters and you can send as many SMS as you want.
